Banana
Banana (scientific name: Musa nana Lour.) is a genus of banana in the family Bananaceae, also referred to as its fruit, and is widely grown in the tropics. Banana is fragrant and rich in nutrients. The plant is a large herb, emanating from a rhizome, forming a pseudopole 3-6 m (10-20 ft) high from the lower part of the leaf sheath; the leaves are oblong to elliptic, some up to 3-3.5 m (10-11.5 ft) long and 65 cm (26") wide, with 10-20 clusters at the top of the stem. The spikes are pendulous , drawn from the top of the pseudostem, with numerous flowers, yellowish; the infructescence is curved and pendulous, bearing 10 to 20 bunches of about 50 to 150 fruits. The plants die after fruiting and continue to reproduce from the suckering roots that grow from the rhizomes, and each plant can live for many years. Native to southeastern Asia, Taiwan, Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. are cultivated. It is also cultivated in Tibet.
